Gamers Wrist (ECU Tendinopathy): Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Have you noticed pain along the pinky side of your wrist after long gaming sessions, working at the computer, or time at the gym?

If it’s getting worse, you may be dealing with Gamers Wrist (ECU tendinopathy), a common overuse injury affecting the wrist.

What is ECU Tendinopathy?

Tendons are the connective tissue that attach your muscles to bones. Tendinopathy describes how a tendon becomes irritated or painful when it is overloaded.

The Extensor Carpi Ulnaris (or ECU for short) is an important muscle that runs along the outside of our forearm and attaches near the base of our pinky finger. The ECU is used when we bend our wrist backwards (extension), or bending our wrist towards the pinky side (ulnar deviation). It’s also an important wrist stabiliser during heavy gripping activities.

Extensor Carpi Ulnaris (or ECU for short) runs along the outside of our forearm and attaches along the bones of our pinky finger.

ECU tendinopathy usually develops due to repeated strain over time.

Causes

  • Increased time spent using computer mouses
  • Limited rest during or between sessions
  • Less than ideal work or gaming set ups
  • Poor technique during golf swings or certain exercises at the gym

Common signs and symptoms include:

  • Aching along the pinky side of your wrist and forearm
  • Tenderness to touch along the back and outside of your wrist
  • Sharper pain while moving your wrist, or during repetitive activities e.g. gaming, golf, gym
  • Swelling on the outside of your wrist
  • In some cases, you may have increased clicking (crepitus) in your wrist while moving it

What Should You Do If You Have Wrist Pain?

  • Reduce aggravating activities temporarily
  • Avoid pushing through sharp pain
  • Adjust your workstation or gaming set-up
  • Start gentle movement and avoid complete rest

The good news is that physiotherapy can effectively manage and resolve this condition.
