If you’ve played sport for long enough, you’ve probably either had a cork yourself or watched one of your teammates limp off the field with one.
A cork is one of the most common injuries seen in contact sports. Although many people think of it as “just a bruise”, a poorly managed cork can keep an athlete out of sport for weeks.
The good news? Most athletes make a full recovery with the right management
A cork, also known as a muscle contusion, occurs when a direct blow causes the muscle to be compressed against the hard underlying bone.
This force damages muscle fibres and small blood vessels, resulting in bleeding, swelling and inflammation within the muscle.

Unlike many sporting injuries, a cork doesn’t usually happen because of overstretching or overuse. Instead, it occurs after a direct impact, such as a collision with another player, a tackle or being struck by sporting equipment.
The severity of a cork depends on the amount of force involved and the amount of bleeding that occurs within the muscle.
Corks are most commonly seen in sports involving contact, collisions, falls and rapid changes of direction.

Seeking physiotherapy treatment early may help reduce recovery time and lower the risk of complications.
Seek prompt medical or physiotherapy assessment if there is rapid or severe swelling, worsening or severe pain, an inability to bear weight or use the affected limb normally, marked weakness, numbness or tingling, or a hard lump developing in the muscle. Urgent assessment is also important if bleeding cannot be controlled or symptoms are getting worse rather than improving.

Recovery times vary depending on the severity of the injury.
For quadriceps contusions (corked thighs), a mild grade 1 injury may involve tenderness, reduced muscle stretch and reduced strength, and generally takes around 2–3 weeks to recover. A moderate grade 2 injury may involve walking with a limp, tenderness and up to a 50% reduction in movement, and generally takes at least 4–6 weeks. A severe grade 3 injury may involve marked tenderness, major loss of movement and strength, and difficulty bearing weight, and generally takes at least 8 weeks. Recovery time varies between individuals and may be longer depending on the severity of the injury and the demands of the sport.
