Marathon Series with Tom Hamilton – Running Shoes

Hey there, fellow runners! It’s time for another edition of our Marathon Series, and today we’re diving into the exciting world of running shoes. So lace up your sneakers and let’s get started!

First things first, let’s talk about the importance of keeping track of the mileage on your running shoes. Most shoes will give you a good five to 800 kilometers of running joy before they start losing their magic. Now, I know they can be a little sneaky because they still feel comfy, but trust me, their stability and support might be waving you goodbye. So, be mindful of the distance you’ve covered and consider retiring your shoes when it’s time for a new pair. And don’t worry if you like to rotate through a few pairs of shoes – variety is the spice of a runner’s life!

Next up, let’s address the delicate matter of toe nails and blisters. Feet have a funny way of expanding while we’re out on the run, so choosing shoes that are half a size up can save you from some unwanted surprises. It’s like giving your toes a mini-vacation, and who wouldn’t love that? Trust me, your feet will thank you later.

Moving on to foot types – we all have our unique footprints, quite literally! If you’re blessed with flat feet or tend to overpronate, it’s crucial to find shoes that cater to your specific needs. So, do some research and find the right shoe that offers the support you require. Personally, as a proud flat-footer, I’ve found my happy running stride in ASICs Gel KAYANO.

Comfort, my friends, is key! Research has shown that comfortable footwear can significantly decrease your risk of injury. So when you slip on a pair of running shoes and they feel like clouds hugging your feet, you’re on the right track. Trust your instincts and choose the shoe that makes you go “Ahhh, this is the one!”

Last but not least, if you’re chasing that personal best and aiming for speed, consider investing in carbon-plated shoes. These beauties, like the Nike Alpha Fly, have a fancy carbon plate and plenty of foam that give you a boost of propulsion, shaving off precious seconds per kilometer. They’re like rocket boosters for your feet – perfect for those marathon warriors among us!

Before we wrap up, let me share a little joke to put a smile on your face: Why did the running shoe go to therapy? Because it had a sole searching experience! (Yes, I couldn’t resist!)

Well, my running comrades, that’s a wrap for today’s blog. I hope you found these tips helpful in your quest for the perfect running shoes. Remember, happy feet lead to happy miles, so choose wisely and keep pounding the pavement!

Speaking of miles, today’s session was a whopping 34 kilometers for me! A kilometer warmup, followed by 32 kilometers at marathon pace (for me, that’s three minutes and 59 seconds), and then a cool-down kilometer to finish it off. Phew! Time to put my feet up and indulge in some post-run treats. Until next time, happy running and stay strong!
