Achilles Pain? Ouch!

We have previously talked about heel or Achilles pain in children known has Sever’s Disease. What about the adult version of Achilles pain? The most common cause of heel pain in adults is Achilles tendinopathy.

Unfortunately, no specific population group is immune to developing Achilles tendinopathy. This means that anyone, from avid sportsman / sportswoman to daily walker and no-walkers, can develop this injury.

Why and How does this happen?

There are 3 powerful muscles in the back of your lower leg which make up your calf muscle. These muscles blend together as they approach your heel to form the Achilles tendon. This is where all the action happens! Your Achilles tendon’s job is to propel your leg forward and to an extent act as a shock absorber when you’re walking. It’s a demanding job. And like you and me, if we overwork we can get sore or cranky.

Symptoms

  • Tenderness or pain around your Achilles tendon
  • Swelling or thickening of the tendon
  • Tightness in the calf muscle
  • Pain or difficulty pushing off – jumping, running, walking, going up stairs
  • Stiffness or pain in the tendon which gets better with movement = get help now!
  • Pain in the tendon that does not get better with movement = tendon REALLY needs help!

What can you do to reduce pain and discomfort?

  • Ice the tendon
  • Heat on the calf
  • Gentle stretching of the calf

There are other injuries involving the Achilles tendon that present and may be confused with a tendinopathy. Regardless of what you think the cause may be, it is always best to have a health professional diagnose and help you manage your pain. Just like you, we want you to feel the very best you can so you can enjoy an active life.
