Did you know we have just had another World Physiotherapy Day? This is a global event that recognises the incredible role physiotherapists play in the community and the relationships that patients have with their physiotherapists. This year’s theme is ‘add life to years’ and I am going to explain how physiotherapy has added life to my years and why I love my job.
Since the age of twelve I have played soccer at a representative level which exposed me to a number of injuries of my own, which landed me on a physiotherapy bed as a patient. I couldn’t help but be intrigued by the explanation of my injuries and how the physiotherapist was able to know what was going on inside my body without ever having scans to confirm this. But sure enough, just as my physio had said, I continued my rehabilitation and the injury always resolved. From this point on, I knew that it was the career for me.
Of course there were a few stepping stones and obstacles that I had to cross to get to the position I am in today, however I can happily say that I have enjoyed the journey. So far Physiotherapy has allowed me to learn about the fascinating human body, meet a bunch of people that I will have as lifelong friends, travel overseas to treat children living in an orphanage in Nepal, treat elite athletes who were representing their country and most of all, it has given me the satisfaction of helping people on a daily basis.
Whether I am assisting an elderly patient walk through a hospital ward, running a group hydrotherapy class or running out onto a sporting field to reposition a dislocated joint, I love every part of the job as long as I am helping my patients achieve their goals and fulfil their potential.
To have experienced all of this at a relatively early stage in my career, I look forward to what Physiotherapy has to offer in the future.
