Michiel van Straten
Michiel is a citizen of the world. He spent his final high school years in the US before returning to the Netherlands to study physiotherapy. He graduated with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy from the University of Utrecht in 1999.
Michiel commenced his career in private practice in the Netherlands, where his work saw him combining his passion for injury management with exercise therapy. This period of his career exposed him to many different clients with a wide range of different injuries or physical illnesses. The combination of hands on therapy and active exercise was very effective and Michiel noted that his clients started to feel that they were in control of their own recovery.
In 2001 he and his partner decided to travel Australia, and this ultimately proved to be a life changing decision. After this 6 month work-holiday experience down-under, Michiel returned to his original workplace and he worked there until 2007. During this time Michiel continued his training with various courses including:
- 3D spinal and peripheral (arms and legs) joint mobilisation.
- The assessment and treatment of pelvic and spinal complaints and pain, at the well-known Spine and Joint Centre in Rotterdam.
- Various taping courses including Kinesio taping.
In order to qualify to become a fully registered Australian physiotherapist, Michiel successfully completed a theoretical exam in Brussels. He then had to demonstrate practical competence with a practical exam in Australia. On his arrival in Australia Michiel completed an internship at Royal North Shore Hospital.
Michiel and his wife Samantha were granted Australian residency and they made the big and challenging move to Australia in early 2011 to live and work in Australia indefinitely.
Michiel has worked at The Healthy Body Company since 2011, and has a keen interest in sport, spinal/pelvic, work and musculoskeletal injuries. Michiel believes that the management of musculoskeletal injuries is most effective when the client is fully engaged in the treatment process. He expects all of his clients to do active exercises and empowers them to make take charge of the process to achieve the best possible outcome whatever their goal may be.
In his free time Michiel loves to follow European and international soccer and tennis. He enjoys swimming, going to the gym and bush walking in the glorious Blue Mountains.
