Rolling an ankle is a painful injury and can affect your daily activities, sports and work. Ankle injuries usually caused by “rolling” your ankle can damage, ligaments, bones and tendons. If not treated adequately as soon as you’re injured the risk is poor recovery and long term pain or discomfort.

Ankle pain can be caused by:

  • Acute injury such as rolling an ankle, either at sport or while walking or running
  • Torn ligament, tendons and fractures.
  • A fracture in the ankle is commonly associated with rolling, can also be from a blunt force or following an accident such as falling off a bike or a motor vehicle accident.
  • Tendon injuries and overuse injuries from poor biomechanics whether that be when walking or running, this can cause inflammation and pain
  • Heel pain such as plantar fasciitis can affect how we walk putting extra pressure through the ankle
  • Poor footwear
  • Tight muscles, especially calf and peroneals

The most common symptoms of ankle pain are:

  • Pain and swelling
  • Bruising
  • Inability to walk without pain
  • Loss of strength and mobility
  • Stiffness in the ankle joint
  • Stiffness in the front of the foot
  • Pain through the arch
  • Heel pain
